Towards a modern classification of Orobanche (Orobanchaceae) and related genera.

Recent molecular phylogenetic studies of Orobanchaceae clarified the circumscription of a clade including exclusively non-photosynthetic members, Orobanche being the largest among those. Traditionally, this genus is divided into four sections: Gymnocaulis (North America), Myzorrhiza (New World), Orobanche (Old World), and Trionychon (Old World). Using morphological, molecular phylogenetic, karyological and cytological data, a re-classification of the whole group is proposed, which seeks a compromise between reflecting the phylogenetic relationships and cohesiveness of each group and requiring as few new names as possible.
