Influence of various Phosphorus sources on P accumulation and enzyme activities in Duo grass (Duo festulolium).

Phosphorus (P) is an essential mineral nutrient for the growth and development of plants. But the availability of the soil P is limited, as a major fraction of soil P exists as organic P which is unavailable to plants. P- based fertilizers and animal manures are applied to the soil to increase P availability often resulting in an enhanced P level in soil leading to accelerated loss to water bodies through runoffs. Among the various crop plants and forages screened for their ability to extract P from soil at an enhanced rate, Duo grass (Duo felulolium) showed promise as a hyperaccumulator of P. Approximately 1% P was accumulated in the shoots of Duo grass from P- enriched soil under green house conditions. Phytase enzyme activity was also assayed in the roots of grass grown in media containing various P sources (KH2PO4, IHP, AMP and G1P) to assess its ability to utilize organic P sources. Enhanced level of enzyme activity was observed under P- rich conditions. Results of enzyme assay revealed an elevated enzyme activity in the medium surrounding the roots grown in KH2PO4, IHP and G1P. Biomass was also increased in presence of KH2PO4 as well as IHP as P source. Studies on P accumulation in shoot and roots of duo grass grown in various P nutrition as well as root phytase activity under various time intervals will also be discussed.
