Combined effects of different heavy metals: lead, copper, nickel and zinc upon Sesbania drummondii growth, metal accumulation and antioxidative system. In the present study, Sesbania seedlings were grown for 10 days in a Hoagland nutrient medium to which lead, copper, nickel and zinc were added singly and in combinations in order to assess the effects of metal interactions on seedling growth, metal accumulation and anti-oxidative system. Seedling growth was measured as biomass accumulation and was significantly inhibited with metal treatments. The level of inhibition depended on metal type and metal combinations. The photosynthetic efficiency of S. drummondii in the presence of different metals was assessed by measuring Fv/Fm and Fv/F0 ratios. Fv/Fm and Fv/F0 ratios were affected with metals as well as with different metal combinations. All metals studied accumulated substantially higher in the roots than shoots. Sesbania accumulated significantly higher Pb in its roots as well as in shoots as compare to other metals (Cu, Ni and Zn) at all the treatments. In addition, bioaccumulation of a single metal in the roots as well in the shoots was influenced by the presence of other metals. Sesbania seedlings protected against metal induced oxidative stress by the operation of antioxidant defense system comprising both enzymatic [superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR)], and non-enzymatic (glutathione) antioxidant. Seedlings exposed to different metals responded differently with reference to activities of SOD, APX and GR. The enhancement in enzyme activities followed the order of Cu>Ni>Pb>Zn. However, compared to the effect of individual metal, metals in combination increased the enzymes activities to varying degrees indicating that the co-presence of metals enhanced the toxic effect of single metal.
