Systematics Section / ASPT Evans, Timothy M. [1], Dondero, Mark [2], Wixson, Matthew C. [2], Ball, Eric M. [2], Faden, Robert B. [3]. Phylogenetic Examination of the Genus Aneilema (Commelinaceae) based on Nuclear and Chloroplast DNA Sequences. The genus Aneilema (Commelinaceae) comprises 63 species from three geographic areas: sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula (58 species); Australia and surrounding islands (5 species); and tropical America (1 species). A molecular phylogenetic analysis is being undertaken to examine relationships within the genus. Using DNA sequences from a chloroplast DNA intergenic spacer (trnL-trnF) and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (ITS), several preliminary conclusions can be drawn about the classification of Aneilema: 1) Aneilema is not monophyletic, due to the inclusion of Rhopalephora within the Aneilema clade; 2) Aneilema plus Rhopalephora form a monophyletic clade if the neotropical A. brasiliense is excluded, as was suggested by Faden (1991); 3) the sections recognized by Faden (1991) are not supported; 4) Pollia is the sister genus to Aneilema; and 5) Aneilema brasiliense is closer to Pollia than it is to the Aneilema-Rhopalephora clade. Additional species and DNA regions are being added to the data matrix in order to provide a fine-scale species-level phylogeny for the genus. Log in to add this item to your schedule
