Systematics Section / ASPT Miller, Joseph T. [1], Seigler, David S. [2]. The breakup of Acacia: a molecular and morphological update. The species of Acacia sens. lat. are currently undergoing significant reclassification. This is due, in a large part, to the recent molecular work that has confirmed previous morphological studies and concluded that the genus was not monophyletic. At least five monophyletic lineages have been defined within the genus and these are distributed throughout the tribes Mimoseae and Ingeae of the Mimosoideae. This presentation will discuss molecular DNA data as well as new cladistic analysis of morphological data used to redefine the generic classification of the genus into five segregate genera (Acacia, Vachellia, Senegalia, Acaciella and Mariosousa). These data show that Vachellia (formerly subg. Acacia) is closely related to species in the tribe Mimoseae while Acacia (formerly subg. Phyllodineae) is closely related to members of the Tribe Ingeae. Special emphasis will be given to the American species in regard to their phylogenetic relationships, ecology and biogeography.
