Education & Outreach Gunning, B [1]. Images of plant cell biology on DVD: information for students and a resource for teachers. A versatile user interface has been developed for presenting images on structure-function relationships at intracellular level on DVD, facilitating learning by students and use as a resource by teachers. >2000 images and >200 movies (time lapse and confocal animations) have been organised in 14 “chapters” dealing with an introduction to plant cells, nucleus, ER, Golgi, plasma membrane, plasmodesmata, vacuoles, mitochondria, plastids (nearly 900 images), peroxisomes, cytoskeleton (another very large chapter), vesicle trafficking and positional interactions in the cell. Most or the images are original but >80 contributors have given generously to ensure wide and first-class coverage. Special emphasis is given to movies illustrating phenomena in live cells which few students and teachers are likely to be able to see for themselves. At EM level the superior preservation given by high pressure freezing and freeze substitution is widely exploited. Confocal microscopy and GFP labelling feature in most chapters. Topics can be studied systematically (progress monitoring is provided) or by browsing via comprehensive navigation facilities. The DVD is not a textbook, but concise, referenced text essays introduce many topics and all images have labels and captions. To facilitate use in tutorials and other presentations a built-in recorder allows sequences of screens to be pre-selected for subsequent display as in a slide-show. Sequences are preserved as text files for re-use. Details are available at www.plantcellbiologyonDVD.com. Log in to add this item to your schedule
