Evaluation of antifungal effect of Litchi chinensis Sonn. ethanolic extracts against tree pathogenic fungi.

The antifungal effect of ethanolic extracts from the leaves and twigs of Litchi chinensis Sonn. against seven tree pathogenic fungi were evaluated by agar assay. The results of antifungal tests showed that both ethanolic extracts of leaves and twigs exhibited antifungal activities. The antifungal indices of ethanolic extract from leaves at the concentration of 1000 µg/ml ranged form 62.2 to 2.1%, while the ethanolic extract of twigs ranged form 44.9 to 2.9%, indicating that the leave extract had better inhibitory effect than twig extract. The leaf ethanolic extract was further investigated for the antifungal activities of its three organic soluble fractions, hexane, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane, using liquid-liquid partition and agar assay. The results indicated that dichloromethane soluble fraction processed the strongest antifungal activities ranging from 70 to 20% at the concentration of 1000 µg/ml. Tree pathogenic fungus, Fusarium solani was the most vulnerable to the dichloromethane soluble fraction in all test fungi, while Colletotrichum gloeosporioides revealed the highest resistance. In the hexane soluble fraction, at the concentration of 1000 µg/ml, its antifungal indices ranged from 68.0 to 18.6%, which was lower than that of dichloromethane soluble fraction. The hexane soluble fraction exhibited significant antifungal effect against F. solani and Rhizoctonia solani with average antifungal index values of 68.0% and 67.9%, respectively. Among three fractions, ethyl acetate fraction had the lowest inhibitory effect. In conclusion, dichloromethane fraction exhibited the highest inhibitory effect on the growth of tree pathogenic fungi, suggesting that it might have the potential to be developed as environmental-friendly fungicide, and is worthy of further study on its bioactive compounds.
