Tropical Biology Section Romeiras, Maria [1], Pais, Maria Salomé [2], Duarte, Cristina [3]. Using databases to investigate biodiversity of Cape Verde Islands. The digitizing of biological collections kept in world Herbaria is actually a main concern for the scientific community. The internet has opened new opportunities for access to the vast store of biodiversity information contained in these natural history collections. In the Instituto de Investigação CientÃfica Tropical of Lisbon / Portugal (IICT) are kept very important collections of African plant diversity, namely from former Portuguese colonies (e.g., Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Principe, and Cape Verde Islands). In Cape Verde archipelago, plant diversity is presently composed of representatives of various floristic elements (e.g., mediterranean; afrotropical; neotropical) and a particularly rich endemic flora thus exists. Most of the taxa are well represented in the IICT Herbarium (LISC) collections and representative specimens of endemic taxa (some of them type materials) are present. The divulgation of historical and biological information existent in this Portuguese Institution is of major importance to the development of taxonomic and conservation studies, and also to reinforce the collaboration with Cape Verde Institutions. The goal of the present project is to provide information (e.g. morphological, ecological, chorological and molecular data) for the development of a future on-line Cape Verde Flora, contributing to enrich our knowledge about the plant biodiversity of these remote islands.
