Education & Outreach Friesner, Joanna [1], Gasser, Charles [2]. The Multinational Coordinated Arabidopsis thaliana Functional Genomics Project. The Multinational Arabidopsis Steering Committee (MASC) was established in 1990 to provide coordination to the international effort to sequence the Arabidopsis genome and facilitate worldwide communication. The Arabidopsis genome sequence, completed in 2000, was the first complete plant and the third multicellular organism to have its entire genome sequenced. In order to facilitate Arabidopsis research, the MASC is responsible for (1) coordinating programmatic aspects of world-wide Arabidopsis functional genomics, (2) facilitating open communication and free exchange of data, materials, and ideas (3) monitoring and summarizing progress of participating laboratories, (4) identifying needs of the Arabidopsis research community and communicating them to funding agencies of participating countries, and (5) periodically updating and adjusting the course of the project. MASC maintains a functional genomics web page hosted at TAIR (www.arabidopsis.org/portals/masc/index.jsp) and produces and publicly disseminates the annual MASC report (freely available online at TAIR) that provides information about ongoing Arabidopsis functional genomics. The current phase of functional genomics research focuses on assigning a function to all Arabidopsis genes by 2010. The next phase (2010 and beyond) is being developed by the MASC and other members of the Arabidopsis community in conjunction with funding agencies. To provide input on this phase, or any other aspect of the MASC, you may send suggestions or comments to the MASC via the MASC coordinator (Joanna Friesner, jdfriesner@ucdavis.edu). The North American Arabidopsis Steering Committee (NAASC) represents North Americans Arabidopsis researchers (www.arabidopsis.org/portals/masc/countries/NAASC_Info.jsp), and members serve on the MASC.
