Phylogeny and Biogeography of Cornales -Increased sampling in taxa and characters, placement of Hydrostachys, BEAST vs. Multidivtime, and DIVA vs. AreA.
Cornales is the first branching lineage in the asterids clade. This clade consists of several small families, Cornaceae, Alangiaceae, Nyssaceae, Davidiaceae, Mastixiaceae, Grubbiaceae, and Hydrostachyaceae, as well as two larger families Hydrangeaceae and Loasaceae. The biogeographic distributions of Cornalean taxa exhibit many intercontinental disjunctions, from those involving only the north temperate regions to disjunctions extending to the tropical areas and southern hemisphere. Relationships at the deep nodes of the Cornales phylogeny remained unresolved in previous studies using three gene sequences with incomplete sampling of families. To solve relationships at the deep nodes, complete DNA sequences from six cpDNA regions (ndhF, atpB, trnH-K, trnL-F, matK and rbcL) and 26S rDNA from the nuclear genome were generated for all families and all genera except for Loasaceae, for which representative genera of major clades were sampled. Phylogenetic analyses using MrBayes applying specific models for each gene region completely resolved the relationships with high posterior probabilities. The phylogeny suggests a different interpretation regarding the evolutionary status of key taxonomic traits in Cornales. Biogeographic analyses are performed with parsimony (DIVA) and likelihood (AReA) methods using the phylogeny and information from fossils and divergence time estimated with BEAST and Multidivtime. The results from different methods will be compared.
